Twitter Myths : Interesting research about twitter

January 6, 2009 · Posted in Blogging, General, Internet Marketing, Traffic Generation, Twitter

Twitter, one of the best microblogging tool has also gained so much popularity for internet marketing to drive tons of traffic to targeted websites. In the race to getting maximum out of twitter users are suffering from some usual myths about twitter which can lead them to frustration on twitter instead of getting better result.

So following are some myths which are increasing rapidly for twitter.

  • The more people you follow, you will get more followers
  • Everyone who follows you will surely click on your link
  • Controversial updates are best way to get followers
  • Updates are not important to get more followers

The more people you follow, you will get more followers

As shown in the above image this person is following 2000 people but gets only 655 followers. And I wonder that he has only 108 updates. Many times you will find this kind of scenario on twitter that number of followers is far less than the number of persons you follow. Here what I suggest you give more and more interesting twitter updates and I am sure you will increase the followers list.

Everyone who follows you will surely click on your link

It is not 100% sure that if you are getting one follower he will surely visit your link. Here what I suggest you to write an attractive bio about yourself and I am sure that chances your follower click on your link will increase dramatically.

Controversial updates are best way to get followers

As everybody know that if you update about something on twitter it will be disappear from first page within few minutes and like me most of the people rarely click on older entries. So by doing controversial updates you will get some visits to your twitter profile for time being but as soon as that update disappears from followers’ main page you will be forgotten for sure.

Updates are not important to get more followers

Here you will think that I am double minded about the updates on twitter. Here I would like to tell you that only regular meaningless twitter updates will not attract people. People will be attracted by interesting updates like some funny quotes or some shocking headlines. Also you can market about your product with some interesting small descriptions to that.

I am sure that there are so many other myths about twitter which I may not have covered here. I would surely like to know if you have some more information about it. Till then you can follow me on twitter here.

I personally think the opposite, you should not follow whom doesn’t even following you. For that I am still doing a spring cleaning to un-follow those who’s not following me.

following other people so that they would follow you too isn’t a myth. Basically when you follow someone, it doesn’t mean that they would follow you back. some of the people aren’t active on Twitter. If works this way, the more people you follow the more chances of people following you.

BTW, I have read that you are interested on sponsoring my contest, Thanks. It would be held on the last week of January.

I agree with Paul U. It really isn’t necessarily a myth. But following more people would give you a higher probability of getting a number of followers in return…

I also agree on most of the things you enumerated. Personally I’m not impressed to those twitter members who are high profile. I just add them because I like them but if their tweets are not interesting to me, I won’t click.

That’s pretty interesting…and I agree with your points. And as a matter of fact, I do not blindly follow people just because they are following me. And twitter clicks, as you said, has the worst click-through-ratio (even worse than feed reach)

This is what people call follow spam. You just follow as many as you can and they are chances that people will follow you back. One good example is Mr. Barack Obama!

Twitter myths debunked. Great! I love it. It’s a common sight to see people who follow loads of people but don’t get many followers themselves. Anyways I do have one myth to add… the Myth is… that Twitter will surpass facebook. I personally think twitter will never get to the level of facebook, hehe. So consider that a Myth Debunked!

Twitter is one of the famous social media sites most used these days, you can get sales by referring other person or professional to a certain product in return thy will refer you the same thing you did for them.

Interesting that you call it a “micro blogging tool” there are many that would openly debate this, but that’s another story. You are right about the myths, as with many things in life there are going to be assumptions, wrong assumptions, that will leave people in the dark.

    Till then,
